Wallpaper Manager V2.0
04/27/92
Wallpaper Manager (WM) is a flexible Windows utility for managing and
displaying desktop wallpapers. WM allows you to assemble and edit
multiple wallpaper display lists; each list stored in its own "Gallery"
file. Rather than using DOS filenames to refer to these wallpapers you
can assign each one a descriptive title. With WM you can display new
wallpapers manually, at Windows start-up, or by timer. Wallpapers can be
selected randomly or in a user defined order. Centered or tiled display
mode is individually selectable for each wallpaper. Hot keys can be set
for popping up WM and for browsing papers.
WM supports wallpapers in three formats: BMP, RLE, and BLZ. BMP and RLE
are standard Microsoft bitmap formats; BMP is uncompressed, RLE is
compressed using run length encoding. The third format, BLZ, is also
compressed but using the Lempel-Ziv algorithm. WM can convert
wallpapers between these three formats as well as display them.
[Conversions and BLZ format support are not enabled in the shareware
version of WM. See Registering WM below.]
With WM's Organize feature you can move or copy wallpapers between
directories while optionally converting them between the supported
formats. This is particularly useful if you have wallpapers on a CD and
would like to migrate them to a hard disk for faster access.
WM requires Windows 3.0 or higher running in standard or enhanced mode
and a VGA or better display. A mouse is not required. The present
version has not been tested with a network.
Wallpaper Manager is distributed as ten files:
1) WALL.EXE, the program proper. This can be placed in any directory.
2) WALLKEY.DLL, dynamic link library for hot key support. This
should be placed either in the Windows directory, the Windows
SYSTEM subdirectory, in a directory specified by the DOS PATH
variable, or the same directory as WALL.EXE.
3) WALLZS.DLL, dynamic link library for file compression/expansion.
This file should be placed with WALLKEY.DLL.
NOTE: This file is not included in the shareware package. To obtain
it you must register your copy of WM. See below for information
about registration.
4) COMMDLG.DLL, Microsoft Common Dialogs dynamic link library. This is
distributed as part of Windows 3.1 and also with many Windows
applications so you probably already have it. Check your WINDOWS
and WINDOWS/SYSTEM directories. If you do not have it or if the
file included here is more recent than the one already on your system
then you should copy this file to your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory.
5) WALL.INI, WM's initialization file. The distribution copy is fully
commented and should be placed in your WINDOWS directory.
If WM fails to find WALL.INI it will create a new one (but without
comments) in the WINDOWS directory. (See also note below on WPMINIT).
6) WALL.GAL, an empty "gallery" file. Gallery files hold wallpaper
lists and certain operating settings. The distribution copy is fully
commented and should be placed in your WINDOWS directory
along with WALL.INI. If WM fails to find WALL.GAL it will
create a new one.
7) WALL.HLP, WM's online Help file. This should also be placed
in the WINDOWS directory, the Windows SYSTEM subdirectory, in a
directory specified by the DOS PATH variable, or in the same
directory as WALL.EXE. WM will run without this file but the
detailed operating instructions contained there will not be
available. (See also note below on WPMHELP).
8) MAJA.BMP, a sample wallpaper file. This is a 160 x 120 pixel
256-level gray scale scan of Fransisco Goya's "Nude Maja".
Note that this does produce very well on 16 color displays
and is provided only as a sample. It looks best on 256+ color
displays.
9) TVENUS.BMP, a 640 x 480 pixel 256-level gray scale scan of
Titian's "Reclining Venus". This second sample file is only
included on the registered copy distribution diskette.
10) WALLREAD.ME, this file.
[NOTE: If for some reason you cannot place WALL.INI and/or WALL.HLP in
one of the directories suggested above (due to a name conflicts, for
example) you can specify new paths and names by setting the environment
variables WPMINIT and WPMHELP, e.g.,
SET WPMINIT=c:\other\path\[name.ext] (to relocate/name WALL.INI)
SET WPMHELP=c:\other\path\[name.ext] (to relocate/name WALL.HLP)
These must be set before Windows is started and are typically included
in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The name and extension are optional. If left
unspecified WM assumes the name "WALL" for both files, the "INI"
extension for its initialization file, and the "HLP" extension for its
help file.
WM will look for WALL.GAL in the same directory as WALL.INI. If you use
WPMINIT to rename WALL.INI to MYWALL.GAL, for example, then WM will look
for a Gallery file named MYWALL.GAL.]
All other information required to operate Wallpaper Manager is available
in its online Help.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR USERS UPGRADING FROM VERSION 0.90:
-----------------------------------------------------
If you are upgrading from the "beta" version, 0.90, and have a wallpaper
list defined that you would like to preserve, then:
1) Do not copy WALL.INI or WALL.GAL to your hard disk.
2) To be safe make a back-up copy of your original WALL.INI file
under a different name, e.g., WALL.090.
3) Make sure that your original version 0.90 WALL.INI file is either
in the WINDOWS directory or correctly relocated using the WPMINIT
environment variable as described above.
4) Run WM version 2.0. WM will detect that your WALL.INI file is in the
old "pre-galleries" format and pop up a message box offering to
automatically convert it to the new format. Click OK to proceed with
the conversion. Clicking Help will abort the conversion and switch you
to an on-line help topic that further describes the process.
When you convert your old WALL.INI it is divided into two files: a new
WALL.INI that contains global configuration information for WM, and a
"gallery" file, WALL.GAL, that contains your original wallpaper list and
"local" operating settings such as Switching Mode, Duration, etc. The
on-line help describes which operating settings for WM are global and
which local to each gallery file.
REGISTERING WM
--------------
WM is distributed as shareware. You are free to try it out and to copy
it and give it to others. If you like the program and use it regularly
you are expected to pay $20 to register your copy.
Note that format conversion and BLZ support are not enabled in the
shareware version of WM. The shareware version also displays a "nag"
message on start up and when changing wallpapers. These are intended as
inducements to get you to register your copy; the shareware version is
otherwise fully functional.
When you register your copy of WM I will send you the latest version of
the program with format conversions enabled and no nag message. Please
specify either 5 1/4" or 3 1/5" diskettes for your order. In addition, I
will notify you of significant updates (if you have a CServe account
number I can contact you that way if you prefer). Comments, suggestions,
and bug reports are welcome. Informal telephone support is available.
